Solar flare may cause magnetic storms on Earth: RAS expert explains possible consequences
"A plasma ejection has occurred on the Sun. If the plasma reaches Earth, magnetic storms are predicted. Everything depends on the power of the ejection and its direction. If it's a powerful ejection, it will reach Earth in a day; if not very powerful - in three days. Will this plasma ejection miss? There are frequent errors here, and the alert turns out to be false," said Nathan Eismont, a leading researcher at the Department of Space Dynamics and Mathematical Information Processing of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in an interview with RT.
The scientist noted that if solar plasma reaches our planet, it will trigger magnetic disturbances with a range of potential effects.
"If it's a powerful ejection, auroras may appear even at low latitudes. Magnetic storms affect spacecraft operating near Earth. There may be interference with communications and navigation. People sensitive to magnetic storms may notice malaise," emphasized Eismont.
