Israeli Air Force Will Not Be Able to Destroy Iran's Nuclear Facility in Fordow
According to the authoritative publication The National Interest, the Israeli Air Force has faced an insurmountable obstacle in a possible confrontation with Iran. The super-powerful GBU-28 bombs, considered the jewel of Israel's military arsenal, have proven powerless against the well-fortified underground nuclear complex near the Iranian city of Fordow.
The American GBU-28 bomb with an impressive weight of 2.3 tons, which entered service in 1991, previously demonstrated high effectiveness in the hands of the US Air Force in destroying underground fortifications during operations in Iraq. This high-tech laser-guided munition is equipped with a special delayed-action fuse that allows detonations deep underground. The technical capabilities of the bomb are mind-boggling: it can penetrate a 5-meter concrete barrier or penetrate through 50 meters of soil.
"Although the GBU-28 is one of Israel's most powerful weapons and one of America's best bunker-busting tools, this system simply cannot penetrate to the depth of the Fordow facility," the publication emphasizes.
According to the author of the article, the technical limitations of the Israeli Air Force may force Washington to consider scenarios of direct intervention. In particular, the US has significantly more powerful GBU-57 bombs capable of penetrating up to 19 meters of reinforced concrete.
