Russian public association "Voice of the People" has come forward with an initiative to introduce "sobriety days" in the country.
As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to Russian media, activists have sent an official appeal to the Ministry of Health and the State Duma with a proposal to ban the sale of alcoholic products on five significant dates for the country.
According to the proposal, restrictions may affect the following days: May 25 (Last Bell Day), June 28 (school graduation), July 8 (Day of Family, Love and Fidelity), September 1 (Knowledge Day) and October 3 (World Sobriety Day). The initiative is inspired by the successful experience of neighboring Belarus, where such practices are already actively implemented in several regions.
In their appeal, the public activists emphasize that the introduction of "sobriety days" will be an important step towards promoting a healthy lifestyle, effective prevention of alcoholism, especially among the younger generation, and will also help significantly reduce the negative consequences of alcohol consumption. In addition to a temporary ban on alcohol sales, the organization proposes to fill these days with special educational events. The program may include meetings with leading medical experts, educational lectures about the harms of alcohol, and vibrant campaigns in support of a healthy lifestyle.
Russian Minister of Health Mikhail Murashko had previously noted that restricting alcohol consumption can bring "quick victories" that "allow reducing mortality rates and population disability."
