Audacious heist of the century: fraudsters stole 47 million pounds from the British treasury
An unprecedented scam has shocked the United Kingdom - criminals carried out a large-scale theft from the budget of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), appropriating a colossal sum of 47 million pounds sterling (about 64 million dollars).
The investigation established that the perpetrators hacked the personal accounts of more than 100 thousand British citizens. Armed with stolen personal data, the criminals coldly filed applications for social benefits on behalf of unsuspecting taxpayers.
Angela MacDonald, Deputy Chief Executive of HMRC, revealed shocking details of the incident. According to her, the criminal group successfully received three large tranches totaling 47 million pounds sterling (64 million dollars).
Jim Harra, who heads the tax authority, did not hide the seriousness of the situation, calling what happened an "organized criminal phishing attack." The main goal of the perpetrators was to steal user identification data from HMRC information systems.
