Dentist revealed hidden cause of stomach and intestinal problems

The health of teeth and gums is directly linked to the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract — and this connection works both ways. Dentist Maksim Labukhin explained which oral diseases can seriously undermine the health of the stomach and intestines.

As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to "Lenta.ru", malocclusion, cavities, and gum inflammation can trigger a chain of gastrointestinal problems. However, the reverse connection is no less significant: gastritis, reflux, and peptic ulcer disease deal a noticeable blow to dental health.

M. Labukhin emphasized that cavities, pulpitis, and periodontitis represent constant sources of infection in the body. If oral hygiene leaves much to be desired, pathogenic microorganisms begin to actively multiply — and inevitably enter the gastrointestinal tract along with food.

As the specialist explained, the waste products of bacteria aggressively affect the mucous membranes of the stomach and intestines, provoking the development of inflammatory processes.

At the same time, the stomach is also capable of "taking revenge" on the teeth: the increased acidity characteristic of gastritis and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) has a destructive effect on tooth enamel. The acid softens and thins it, leading to increased tooth sensitivity to hot and cold and significantly raising the risk of developing cavities.
