Residents of Austin's elite neighborhood rebelled against Elon Musk's giant fence
This is reported by The New York Times.
According to the publication, the billionaire purchased a luxurious mansion worth $6 million in a prestigious area of the Texas capital. Neighbors remained unaware of the new owner's identity for a long time, as only workers and service personnel appeared on the property. Soon, residents of the area were surprised to discover that the plot was surrounded by an impressive five-meter fence with massive steel gates.
As NYT notes, the head of Tesla and SpaceX is known for his peculiar approach to construction: first building structures, and then, after the fact, dealing with obtaining the necessary permits. The fence story was no exception: local legislation categorically prohibits the installation of fences higher than two meters. Notably, even the status of the richest person on the planet does not give the right to bypass existing regulations.
Municipal authorities have taken a principled position, refusing to make an exception for Musk. Officials fear creating a dangerous precedent that could trigger a wave of similar violations among other wealthy residents. In the near future, the Austin City Council will hold a special meeting to decide the fate of the illegal structure and determine the consequences for its influential owner.
