Life after sunset: 12-year-old Spanish boy receives rare diagnosis, allowing him to go outside only at night

Doctors in Spain have given a shocking diagnosis to a 12-year-old boy, completely changing his daily life. The child can leave home exclusively after sunset due to a dangerous genetic disease. The publication El Periodico reported on this unusual medical case.

Doctors diagnosed the young Spaniard with xeroderma pigmentosum – a rare hereditary disease in which the skin shows extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation. This condition multiplies the probability of developing skin cancer even with brief exposure to sunlight. Unfortunately, modern medicine is currently powerless in fighting this ailment, so the only safe time for the boy's walks remains the evening and night hours.

Strict restrictions on daytime outings are violated only for school attendance. However, even in these cases, the child is forced to observe unprecedented protective measures. Each trip to school turns into a real special operation: the boy applies special sunscreen, dresses in long-sleeved clothing, wears gloves, pants, protective glasses, and a hat with a shield. In addition, he constantly carries a device to measure the level of ultraviolet radiation. The child's mother regretfully acknowledges that such restrictions have significantly worsened her son's social adaptation, depriving him of many joys of a normal childhood.
