For the first time in history: a woman will lead the legendary British intelligence MI6
This is reported by TUT.AZ with reference to Bloomberg.
According to the official statement, 47-year-old Blaze Metreveli will become the new head of the Secret Intelligence Service of Great Britain this autumn, replacing Richard Moore. Currently, Metreveli holds the position of Director General for Technology and Innovation in this elite intelligence service.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the special significance of this appointment: "The work of our intelligence services today is more important than ever before".
"The United Kingdom faces threats of unprecedented scale - whether it's aggressors who send their spy ships into our waters, or hackers whose sophisticated cyber conspiracies aim to disrupt our government services," said the head of the British government.
Metreveli will become the 18th head of MI6 and the first woman in this legendary position. Interestingly, the head of intelligence is traditionally referred to by the letter "C," not the code name "M," which Judi Dench used when portraying the fictional MI6 chief in Ian Fleming's famous Bond series.
This tradition originates from the name of Captain Sir Mansfield Smith-Cumming, the first head of the service, who signed all correspondence in green ink using the letter "C".
It is reported that Metreveli, as the head of MI6, will be the only publicly named employee of the organization.
The new intelligence chief's career began in 1999. During this time, she has worked throughout Europe and the Middle East, and also held a director position in MI5 - the internal intelligence service of Great Britain.
