Bridge collapses in India: there are casualties

Wave of bridge collapses in India: new tragedy claims nine lives

Another infrastructure disaster has shocked India. In Gujarat state, a bridge collapse occurred, resulting in the deaths of at least nine people. Several vehicles plunged into the river along with the debris of the structure. Emergency services promptly arrived at the scene and managed to rescue at least five injured people from the water. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased.

The current year has become a period of serious challenges for India in the sphere of infrastructure safety. Across the country, a whole series of bridge collapses has occurred in various states, which has not only led to human casualties but also raised serious questions about the reliability and safety of aging public structures.

The tragic incident was reminiscent of the 2022 catastrophe, when in the same state of Gujarat, a century-old suspension bridge collapsed just days after the completion of repair works and reopening. More than 130 people died at that time. Notably, repair work had recently been conducted on this structure again.
