Almost three thousand new cases of chikungunya fever detected in China

Chikungunya fever epidemic gains momentum: almost 3 thousand new cases in a week in the Chinese border province

During the period from July 27 to August 2, 2892 new cases of chikungunya virus infection were recorded in Guangdong province in southeastern China. The vast majority of those infected — 2770 people — were found in the city of Foshan. According to China Central Television, despite the alarming statistics, no severe cases of the disease or fatalities have been registered.

Kang Min, the chief expert on infectious disease prevention at the Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, noted that the authorities have managed to contain the rapid spread of the epidemic. However, the situation remains tense due to the flood season, which creates favorable conditions for mosquito breeding — the main carriers of the virus.

As preventive measures, the specialist recommends that the population eliminate areas of stagnant water, actively combat adult mosquitoes, and take all possible measures to protect against insect bites.
