Iced drinks can become a "trigger" for exacerbation of digestive diseases, expert warns
Lovers of refreshing drinks with ice risk facing serious digestive problems. As dietitian and nutritionist Evgeny Arzamastsev told in an interview with the TV channel "Moscow 24", cold drinks significantly reduce blood circulation in the digestive system organs.
This effect leads to a slowdown in the work of digestive enzymes that are responsible for normal food breakdown. Although a healthy body usually copes with such a load, for people with chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, the situation can be much more serious.
Medical professionals strongly recommend that patients with gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory processes, and gallstones completely exclude iced drinks from their diet. Otherwise, the cold can provoke a sharp exacerbation of existing problems.
According to Arzamastsev, cold drinks pose a particular danger for those suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). By slowing down the movement of food through the stomach, they increase the reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus, which significantly worsens the patient's condition and the course of the disease.
