A large-scale study conducted by leading American scientific centers has found a convincing correlation between the consumption of high-quality carbohydrates in middle age and healthier, more active longevity.
High-quality carbohydrates include not just any representatives of this nutrient group, but specifically those found in whole grain products, fresh fruits, non-starchy vegetables, and legumes, informs Eatingwell. These valuable nutrients have demonstrated an impressive connection with improved physical activity and cognitive health even decades later, as noted by dietitian Annie Nguyen in her expert commentary.
Dietary habits formed in one's 40s and 50s may prove to be a decisive factor determining the pace of aging in subsequent years. According to the results of the new study, women who regularly included more high-quality carbohydrates and fiber in their diet during middle age demonstrated significantly higher indicators of physical and cognitive health in old age - and they were less likely to suffer from serious chronic diseases, the dietitian emphasizes.
It is particularly important to note that low-quality carbohydrates, such as cookies and white flour pasta, showed exactly the opposite effect, actually accelerating the body's aging processes.
Scientists from Tufts University and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, as a result of their research, came to an unequivocal conclusion: when it comes to the impact of carbohydrates on aging processes, their quality is what matters most.
