Craving for salty foods: harmless habit or alarming signal from the body

As reported by TUT.AZ, the constant desire to consume salty food may be not only a matter of taste preferences but also an indicator of serious disorders in the body. Professor Stanislav Ionov spoke about this in an interview with "Lenta.ru".

The specialist noted that salt plays an important role in the normal functioning of the central nervous system, but its excessive consumption can cause various metabolic disorders, including urolithiasis and cholelithiasis, as well as diabetes. According to the doctor, if the love for salty food is just a habit, it is relatively easy to correct, but an irresistible craving may indicate disturbances in the water-electrolyte balance.

"Normally, the pH of the body's internal environment is 7.2-7.4. When the acid-base balance shifts to the alkaline side, the need for salt increases. The desire for salty food can also be a sign of endocrine disorders or sodium chloride (NaCl) deficiency in the blood. Lack of sodium can lead to damage to the central nervous system, decreased reflex activity, lethargy, apathy, and constant drowsiness," Ionov warned.

The professor emphasized that such pathologies often have a hereditary nature. Deviation of pH levels from the norm can serve as an indicator of such disorders, so with a constant craving for salty foods, the expert recommends not delaying a visit to an endocrinologist for necessary examination.
