UEFA plans revolutionary changes in the new Champions League format

As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to Bild publication, the European Football Union is considering serious adjustments to the regulations of the continent's main club tournament.

According to the source, one of the key changes could be the complete elimination of extra time in playoff matches. In addition, the eight best teams based on the results of the general stage may receive a significant advantage — the right to host decisive return playoff matches at their home stadiums.

Recall that from the 2024/25 season, the Champions League underwent a major reform — the traditional group stage gave way to a general tournament. Now 36 clubs participate in the competition instead of the previous 32, forming a single tournament table. Each team plays 8 matches, after which the leading eight directly qualify for the round of 16, while the next 16 teams compete in an additional playoff round.
