Scientists' discovery: fiber-rich food slows brain aging in elderly people. Specialists from the University of South Dakota found a connection between diet and cognitive abilities in people over 65 years old. The study, results of which appeared in the respected scientific journal Nutrients, reveals the importance of certain micronutrients for maintaining mental clarity in old age.
As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to Nutrients, scientists observed 72 participants aged 65 and older. The results showed that memory and thinking were notably better in those who regularly consumed foods high in fiber, unsaturated fats, vitamins A and E, as well as magnesium and potassium. Particularly beneficial for brain function were carotenoids – natural pigments that give fruits and vegetables their bright yellow, orange, and red colors.
During the study, a concerning fact was revealed: most elderly people experience a serious deficiency of key nutrients, including fiber, potassium, calcium, and a whole range of vitamins. Meanwhile, fans of refined grain products – white bread, regular pasta, and certain types of breakfast cereals – demonstrated worse memory and cognitive function indicators. The researchers emphasize that even considering the observational nature of the work and reliance on participants' self-reports, the conclusions align well with known biological mechanisms, including the anti-inflammatory effect of high-fiber foods.
