The Most Harmful Habits for the Spine Identified

Expert raises alarm: how everyday habits destroy our spine

According to orthopedist Giancarlo Mariano, who shared his observations with Metropoles publication, our regular actions can pose a serious threat to back health. Particularly dangerous are using gadgets with a lowered head, prolonged sitting, and incorrectly chosen pillows for sleep.

The specialist explains that neck muscles in a normal position are designed to support the weight of the head, which is approximately 4.5-5.5 kilograms. However, each centimeter of forward or backward tilt significantly increases the load on the cervical spine, causing its overstrain with constant use of smartphones and other devices.

A sedentary lifestyle also causes substantial harm. Dr. Mariano emphasizes that without regular physical activity, back muscles atrophy and lose their ability to effectively support the torso and maintain proper posture. Interestingly, even prolonged standing without movement can negatively affect spine health. The expert recommends avoiding extended periods in static positions and taking breaks during long trips.

Additionally, the orthopedist draws attention to the importance of choosing the right pillow for sleep. An unsuitable pillow prevents full muscle relaxation during the night, leading to pain and discomfort.
