You don't always need to fast before tests: expert debunks popular myths about laboratory research
"Strict morning fasting is only required for glycemic tests, gastropanel, and lipid profile in established hypertriglyceridemia. For most other tests, it's enough to not eat for just four hours, and some can even be taken after eating," Marina Bezrukova, head of the clinical diagnostic laboratory at the "Be Healthy" clinic network, told "Gazeta.Ru".
According to the expert, for biochemical analysis, complete blood count, and hemostasis indicators, complete fasting is not necessary - it's sufficient to abstain from food for at least four hours before the procedure. A particularly interesting revelation for many patients: genetic testing can be conducted at any time of day regardless of food intake.
"Genetic material remains unchanged regardless of what you ate or what time of day you take the test. The same applies to tumor markers, autoimmune markers, allergy tests, and infection markers - they are not tied to the time of day and strict fasting," Bezrukova emphasized.
Regarding hormonal studies, the specialist recommends taking them predominantly in the morning hours, before 10-11 o'clock, since hormone levels directly depend on the body's circadian rhythms. At the same time, a minimum 4-hour fast is also necessary. The only exception is the hCG hormone, which can be tested at any time, usually determined when pregnancy is suspected.
"It's important to remember that if you need to track laboratory results over time, it's better to do this in the same laboratory. This will help exclude possible variations in research methods and provide a more accurate picture of changes," the specialist emphasized.
