Winter assault on teeth: why cold is dangerous for enamel and how to protect your smile
In cold weather, our teeth are exposed to special danger - enamel sensitivity increases and the risk of micro-damages grows. This alarming information was reported by famous British dentist Raja Juneji in a conversation with HuffPost journalists, writes TUT.AZ.
The expert revealed a non-obvious connection between winter cold and dental health. The main risk factor turns out to be sharp temperature fluctuations. When we leave a warm room and go out into frosty air, and then warm up with a hot drink, our teeth experience a real temperature shock.
"Constant temperature contrasts force dental enamel to expand and contract. Over time, this process can provoke the appearance of microcracks or even disrupt the integrity of existing fillings," warns Juneji.
The situation is exacerbated by another winter problem - reduced saliva production at negative temperatures. Dry mouth not only causes discomfort but also creates ideal conditions for the multiplication of harmful bacteria. The dentist emphasizes the crucial role of saliva in protecting the oral cavity: it neutralizes acids and removes food residues. With a lack of this natural defender, the probability of bad breath and tooth decay significantly increases.
To protect teeth during the winter period, the doctor recommends paying special attention to oral hygiene, trying to minimize exposure to sharp temperature changes, and including special toothpastes for sensitive teeth in your care routine, which will help keep the enamel strong and healthy.
