Dangerous combination: which medications increase the risk of overheating in summer heat

As reported by TUT.AZ, Russian expert, candidate of chemical sciences Alexey Panov explained in an interview with "Gazeta.Ru" about the hidden danger of taking certain medications in hot weather.

According to the specialist, many common medications can seriously impair the body's ability to regulate temperature or worsen dehydration. The risk group includes diuretics, antihypertensive drugs, antidepressants, neuroleptics, and antiallergic medications.

"Special caution should be exercised when taking diuretics, as they accelerate the loss of fluids and electrolytes. Antihypertensive drugs, such as beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors, can impair the cardiovascular system's adaptation to high temperatures. Antidepressants and neuroleptics affect the hypothalamus, reducing the body's ability to cool effectively," Panov explained.

The Russian scientist emphasized that antihistamines, especially first-generation ones (diphenhydramine, chloropyramine), suppress sweating and can cause drowsiness, making a person more vulnerable to overheating.

"Stimulants used for ADHD increase heat production, while non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in high doses can impair kidney function during dehydration. In summer, it's important to adjust medication intake after consulting with a doctor. It may be necessary to reduce the dose or temporarily replace the medication. It's essential to maintain proper hydration, especially when taking diuretics or laxatives," the chemist explained.

Experts recommend avoiding prolonged sun exposure during the hottest hours, as well as monitoring blood pressure and pulse, as heat can enhance the hypotensive effect of some medications. It is strongly advised not to combine medications with alcohol - this increases the risk of dehydration and thermoregulation disorders.
