Feijoa jam: benefits and harms of the exotic dessert. A gastroenterologist revealed the whole truth about the popular delicacy

"Sweet pleasure with an exotic taste can hide both benefits and dangers," warns Russian gastroenterologist Evgeny Belousov. According to him, people with diabetes should completely exclude this dessert from their diet due to its high sugar content. "Even replacing sugar with sweeteners doesn't solve the problem – natural fructose from feijoa still increases blood glucose levels. Moreover, excess easily digestible carbohydrates contribute to the accumulation of fatty tissue," notes the specialist. Special caution should be exercised by people with hyperthyroidism due to the iodine content, as well as those suffering from allergic reactions, stomach ulcers, or gastritis with increased acidity in the acute stage.

The doctor emphasizes the importance of moderation: adults are recommended to limit themselves to 1-2 teaspoons per day, and children over 3 years old – one and a half teaspoons no more than 2-3 times a week.

"However, healthy people shouldn't completely avoid this delicacy. The fiber and pectin preserved in the jam have a beneficial effect on intestinal function, gently stimulating peristalsis and helping to remove toxins. Even after heat treatment, the product retains valuable flavonoids that reduce oxidative stress and inflammation. For residents of regions with iodine deficiency, feijoa jam can become an additional source of this important microelement, although in smaller quantities than in fresh fruits. The preserved vitamin C and phytonutrients support immunity. With a reasonable approach to consumption, this is a much healthier alternative to industrial desserts," concluded the doctor.
