Doctor revealed the connection between stress and acute abdominal pain

Stress and intense emotional experiences can directly affect the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract - this is why many people experience stomach cramps before important events. The reason lies in the close connection between the intestines and the brain.

As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to "Moslenta," gastroenterologist Sofia Kardashova revealed the mechanism of this phenomenon. During stressful situations, the brain activates the adrenal glands, which begin to intensively produce the hormones cortisol and adrenaline. Although this helps the body mobilize forces in the short term, with prolonged exposure to stress, these same hormones become destructive to the body.

According to the medical expert, the gastrointestinal tract becomes the first target of chronic stress. Patients often complain about spasms of the stomach and intestinal muscles, which manifest as aching or sharp pains, bloating, and disruption of the intestine's normal functioning. Disruption of the digestive system's motility can lead to both constipation and diarrhea.

Among the alarming signs of stress affecting the digestive system, the specialist highlights noticeable changes in appetite, increased flatulence, and the appearance of heartburn. Kardashova emphasized the particular danger of prolonged stress states for the body's immune defense, since about 80 percent of immune cells are located in the intestines.

To minimize the negative effects of stress on the gastrointestinal tract, the gastroenterologist advises mastering breathing practices, not neglecting psychological consultation when necessary, and also paying attention to proper nutrition and daily routine. In some cases, drug therapy may be required to restore the normal functioning of the digestive system.
