AI Open AI and Elon Musks Grok faced off in a chess tournament

OpenAI's artificial intelligence o3 crushed Elon Musk's xAI company's Grok 4 model in the final of the Kaggle AI Exhibition chess tournament. According to The Independent, o3 achieved a crushing victory with a score of 4:0, adding a new chapter to the history of confrontation between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Musk, who previously attempted to acquire the company after his departure from it.

In the decisive match, the o3 model showed impeccable play, leaving its opponent without a single chance in all four games. Both systems confidently made it to the final, defeating other participants in previous stages. Commenting on the defeat, Elon Musk stated that Grok's chess abilities are merely a "side effect" and were not the main goal during the system's development.

The Kaggle AI Exhibition tournament featured leading AI models from major technology companies, including Anthropic, DeepSeek, Google, and Moonshot AI. Although computers have surpassed the world's best chess players since 1997, when IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer defeated Garry Kasparov (recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation), and later Google DeepMind created self-learning systems for chess and go, the current competition became the first large-scale test for large language models (LLMs), similar to ChatGPT, in the field of strategic games.

Mats Andre Christiansen, CEO and co-founder of Take Take Take, noted that unlike the historic confrontation between Kasparov and Deep Blue in the 1990s, the main value of the current tournament lies not in its spectacle, but in studying the thinking processes and decision-making of modern AI systems.

Interestingly, in July, the current world chess champion Magnus Carlsen demonstrated his superiority over ChatGPT in an online match, without losing a single piece. Commenting on the final confrontation between Grok and o3, Carlsen estimated Grok's chess rating at approximately 800 points, and o3's at 1200. For comparison, the grandmaster's own peak rating is an impressive 2882 points.
