US President Donald Trump commented on the centuries-old confrontation between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, stating that the countries should independently resolve the territorial dispute, which, according to him, "has been going on for a thousand years."
This is reported by TUT.AZ with reference to RBC.
The roots of the conflict go back to 1947, when after the collapse of British India into two independent states, the status of the historical principality of Kashmir remained undefined. The absence of official border agreements turned some territories of the region into a bone of contention between the two nuclear powers.
"The conflict in Kashmir has been going on for a thousand years, or maybe more. <...> there was a terrible day [April 22], 30 people died <...> Tension has existed on this border for 1,500 years, so they [India and Pakistan] will sort it out themselves one way or another, I'm sure," Trump emphasized.
Tensions in the region sharply escalated after the bloody terrorist attack on April 22 in Jammu and Kashmir. Armed militants shot tourists on a mountain trail in the Baisaran valley, taking the lives of 26 people. The Afghan group "Resistance Front" claimed responsibility for the attack. The tragic incident provoked a new round of tension in relations between Pakistan and India.
