Trump Pressures EU to Increase Tariffs Against China
As reported by The Wall Street Journal, US President Donald Trump is insistently demanding that European Union countries increase tariffs on Chinese goods.
According to the publication, this demand is being put forward as a key condition for concluding a trade agreement between the European Union and Washington.
It is noted that China remains an important market for EU exports, and the bloc is not interested in a trade war with Beijing.
The US also wants Japan and South Korea to impose similar tariffs on Chinese goods.
On April 2, Trump introduced a new system of import tariffs for 185 countries. The base rate was 10% on all imported goods, while for certain countries it was significantly higher - 34% for China, 46% for Vietnam, and 20% for the European Union.
On May 6, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič announced at a European Parliament session that the United States had imposed tariffs on 70% of European Union exports worth €380 billion per year, despite statements about a "freeze."
