Severe fatigue has become the "signature feature" of the new coronavirus strain NB.1.8.1, which specialists compare to the infamous "Omicron".
As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to Russian media, allergist-immunologist Vladimir Bolibok described the characteristic features of the new COVID variant in his interview with international news agencies.
According to the specialist, the new genetic variant of coronavirus was first identified by Chinese scientists in January 2025. Currently, the world is experiencing a large-scale wave of this strain's spread. Dr. Bolibok emphasizes that the virus continues to mutate and demonstrates unprecedentedly high contagiousness.
"The new coronavirus genetic variant NB.1.8.1 has similarities with 'Omicron'. Its spread began from the Southeast Asian region, and today its presence has been recorded in more than 20 countries worldwide," said the medical expert, adding that infection cases have been detected in the USA, Japan, and European countries.
Medical specialists are particularly concerned about the extremely high contagiousness coefficient of this strain – from 12 to 15. This means that one infection carrier can potentially infect up to 15 people in their surroundings.
Speaking about the clinical picture of the disease, the immunologist noted symptoms such as elevated temperature, feverish condition, pain and inflammatory processes in the throat, as well as nasal congestion.
"The signature symptom of this strain is severe fatigue. The patient feels unexplainable weakness. A person wakes up already completely exhausted," the doctor emphasized.
The medical community warns that the new genetic variant may provoke severe complications, especially in children and people with chronic respiratory diseases.
