Former President of Peru Martin Vizcarra sent to prison for five months in corruption case
The judicial authorities of Peru have decided to detain former head of state Martin Vizcarra for a five-month term. The politician is accused of receiving large bribes during the implementation of infrastructure projects. This information was published by the country's general prosecutor's office on its official account on the social network X.
"The prosecutor has secured five months of preventive detention for Martin Alberto Vizcarra Cornejo, accused of passive bribery in the framework of the Lomas de Ilo projects and the expansion of the Moquegua regional hospital, when he held the position of chairman of the Moquegua regional government," the message states.
He was placed in a pre-trial detention center during the investigation, and the defense of the accused intends to appeal the decision.
According to the prosecution, the ex-president may have helped contractor companies obtain construction contracts in exchange for illegal payments amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars. In addition, the prosecutor's office claims that Vizcarra may have concealed campaign activities through fake business trip reports.
