Azerbaijani Entrepreneur Arrested in Russia

Head of Azerbaijani diaspora arrested in Voronezh in bribery case for army evasion

Voronezh law enforcement authorities have detained Yusif Khalilov, a well-known leader of the Azerbaijani diaspora and owner of the city's largest market. The businessman is suspected of giving a bribe, according to Russian media.

According to the investigation, in March of this year, Khalilov transferred 330,000 rubles (about 7,000 manats) to a medical worker to exempt his son from military service. Investigators established that part of the funds was transferred through an intermediary, and 100,000 rubles (about 2,100 manats) were deposited into the recipient's bank account.

On July first, security forces conducted a search at Khalilov's residence, during which material evidence was seized, including a mobile phone with incriminating information. At the moment, the suspect denies his involvement in the crime and refuses to cooperate with the investigation.

A criminal case has been opened against the entrepreneur. According to Russian law, he faces imprisonment for a term of 7 to 12 years, as well as possible deportation from the country.

By court decision, Khalilov will remain in a pre-trial detention center at least until October 14.
