Even routine everyday actions can silently undermine your vision — from infections to serious injuries, specialists warn.
As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to "Gazeta.Ru," ophthalmologist Iskander Bashirov named one of the main threats to the eyes — improper use of contact lenses. Sleeping in lenses and their contact with water dramatically increase the risk of inflammation and dangerous infections, including the rare Acanthamoeba keratitis. At the first signs of pain or discomfort, the doctor recommends immediately removing the lenses and seeking medical help.
Another insidious habit is rubbing the eyes with your hands. It may seem like a harmless gesture, but it can damage the cornea and even trigger the development of keratoconus. Ophthalmologists are also sounding the alarm about self-medication: vasoconstrictor and steroid eye drops only mask the symptoms, and with prolonged use can lead to glaucoma or cataracts.
Everyday household situations also pose serious dangers — working with tools, household chemicals, or setting off fireworks without protective eyewear frequently results in injury. In addition, vision is eroded by ultraviolet radiation, smoking, and diabetes, which can remain asymptomatic for a long time but then suddenly strikes the eyes.
Specialists emphasize that basic hygiene, eye protection, and regular preventive check-ups help preserve vision for many years to come.
