From 60 to 80% of kidney stones are formed from calcium oxalates - hard and difficult-to-destroy compounds. This is reported by TUT.AZ with reference to "Gazeta.Ru".
Vigen Malkhasyan, urologist-oncologist, professor and head of the urological department No. 67 of the Moscow Urological Center, warns: buckwheat, tomatoes, black tea, and beetroot significantly increase the probability of developing kidney stone disease due to high oxalate content.
Oxalates are salts of oxalic acid containing calcium. Approximately 30% of these substances enter the body with food, and the remaining 70% are formed during the metabolism of vitamin C.
"Oxalates are the end product of metabolism. They do not undergo further breakdown and are excreted in urine. In urine, oxalates combine with calcium, forming complexes that crystallize and turn into stones," explained the specialist.
The main factor in stone formation is hyperoxaluria - increased concentration of oxalates in urine. It can be:
alimentary - caused by excess oxalates in the diet;
enteral - associated with excessive absorption of oxalates in the intestine.
Calcium plays a crucial role in reducing oxalate absorption, so dairy products are recommended in the diet for oxaluria.
"On average, a person consumes from 300 to 1000 mg of oxalates daily. During treatment, it is important to reduce this amount to 50 mg. Foods with high oxalate content include cocoa, chocolate, black tea, beetroot, carrots, spinach, sorrel, eggplants, green peppers, parsley, rhubarb, celery, tomatoes, figs, raspberries, nuts, and buckwheat," emphasized the expert.
If you have oxalate stones, it is necessary to check the concentration of oxalates in the urine. In case of elevated levels, you should limit the consumption of products from the mentioned list, reduce the intake of vitamin C, salt, and animal protein, while simultaneously increasing the amount of dairy products and fiber in your diet.
