Unhealthy plant-based diet increases the risk of gout: experts warn about the dangers of refined grains

Gout is a common inflammatory arthritis caused by the deposition of uric acid salts in the joints, accompanied by excruciating pain that rapidly increases and subsides within a few hours or days. There is also reddening of the skin over the joints and their enlargement. Patients also complain of elevated temperature, weakness, and sweating. In advanced cases, characteristic growths form on the joints.

"Gout was once called the 'disease of kings,' associated with excessive consumption of red meat and alcohol. However, in the 21st century, the list of dietary causes of the disease has significantly expanded - now it includes excessive consumption of fish, sweetened beverages, and refined grains. To minimize the risks of developing this disease, it is recommended to follow a healthy plant-based diet that includes whole grain products, tea, coffee, and low-fat dairy products. Moderate consumption of fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids is also acceptable. A healthy diet high in fiber helps the body fight chronic inflammation," explained Nuria Dianova, a first category dietitian and gastroenterologist, to "Gazeta.Ru".
