Tattoos may increase the risk of skin cancer, doctors warn

"Mechanical and thermal damage to the skin, leading to the formation of scar tissue, are risk factors for the development of malignant processes. The procedure of applying tattoos is accompanied by mechanical damage to the skin, which potentially increases the likelihood of malignant neoplasms," Alexey Silin, assistant at the Skripkin Department of Dermatovenerology at the Institute of Clinical Medicine of Pirogov University, told "Gazeta.Ru".

The specialist notes that oncological skin diseases are a rare non-infectious complication after tattoos. Much more often, tattoo salon clients face allergic reactions to pigments, oils, and healing compounds. Such reactions can manifest as contact dermatitis, anaphylaxis, or photodermatitis.

"Infectious complications occur when the rules of tattooing are violated - using non-sterile materials and instruments, the master's non-compliance with the rules of asepsis and antiseptics, as well as improper wound care. After the procedure, it is necessary to carefully care for the treated area of skin. It is recommended to clean the skin with products with an antibacterial effect, such as special gels or soap. It's better to avoid alcohol-containing products. It is important to regularly apply a wound-healing cream, usually containing dexpanthenol, and protect the tattoo from contamination. During the healing period, you should avoid visiting baths, saunas, swimming pools, and refrain from scratching and removing the forming crusts," the doctor emphasized.
