Favorite color can reveal a psychopath: scientists uncover disturbing connection between blue shade and mental disorders
As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to Daily Mail, the connection between color preferences and mental health has scientific foundation dating back to the last century. This relationship was first documented in 1961, when the American Journal of Psychology published a study with shocking data: more than 40% of psychiatric clinic patients named blue as their favorite color.
Modern scientific works have only strengthened this theory. Chinese researchers in 2017 discovered an interesting pattern: people suffering from depression tend to gravitate toward cool tones — blue and purple. Notably, after successful therapy, their preferences shift toward warm, life-affirming shades, such as yellow.
In 2019, psychologist Mark Nemiroff from George Washington University proposed a hypothesis about the deeper meaning of the attraction to blue. According to him, this color gained worldwide popularity due to its calming effect on the body — it lowers heart rate and reduces stress levels.
Contemplating the blue sky or sea creates a feeling of stability and security for those seeking concentration and inner balance. However, that same blueness is often associated with melancholy and isolation — especially in people with emotional instability.
Research shows that people with increased anxiety, depressive states, or a desire to control others often choose the color blue as a kind of "emotional medicine." "Psychologically, blue reflects the most important aspects of human experience. On one hand, it embodies joy and tranquility — as in the expressions 'blue sky' or 'cloudless days.' On the other hand, this same color is associated with sadness, pain, and life's trials — as in the phrase 'singing the blues.' Blue is a harbinger of depression. In the emotional spectrum, it is the most accepting and simultaneously the most complex color," Nemiroff emphasized.
