Earth on the threshold of a new ice age: sensational discovery by a Russian-Finnish scientific group
The work was published in the scientific journal Geosciences.
Scientists from the Kola Science Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, together with colleagues from the Finnish Institute of Natural Resources, have made a disturbing discovery. After conducting a large-scale analysis of tree rings over a period of more than 7,600 years using advanced artificial intelligence technologies, researchers have concluded that our planet will experience a sharp cooling during the period 2063-2073.
According to Elena Kasatkina, a leading researcher at the KSC RAS, the upcoming climate changes may provoke extreme weather events and cause serious social upheaval. Human history has already faced similar climatic cataclysms - the little ice ages of 1310-1370 and 1645-1715, which left a deep mark on the development of civilization.
Scientists cite the cyclical decrease in solar activity combined with powerful volcanic eruptions as key factors in the impending cooling. Paradoxically, these processes may temporarily slow down global warming, but the long-term consequences for humanity are predicted to be extremely unfavorable.
The study also confirms the cyclical nature of climate change on Earth with a periodicity of 300-400 years, which forces a new look at modern climate processes.
