Scientists have discovered: rosemary extract protects the brain from chemotherapy side effects. Egyptian researchers from Ain Shams University have proven that this herbal preparation can significantly improve memory and attention in patients undergoing anti-tumor treatment.
As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to the journal Food & Function, scientists conducted a series of experiments on rats that were injected with oxaliplatin - a popular chemotherapeutic drug known for its negative effects on the nervous system. The animals then received rosemary extract in two forms - classical alcoholic and innovative nano-form for better absorption by the body.
The results were impressive: both forms of rosemary effectively protected the hippocampus - a key memory center in the brain - and notably improved the cognitive functions of the test animals. Laboratory analysis revealed that the extract not only restores the antioxidant protection of nerve cells but also reduces inflammation while blocking neuron death mechanisms.
A particularly important discovery was the activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway under the influence of rosemary, which is critically important for maintaining a healthy brain structure. The researchers especially note that the extract does not interfere with the anti-tumor effect of chemotherapy - a fact exceptionally important for potential medical applications.
Despite the centuries-old use of rosemary in traditional medicine, this study became one of the first to scientifically confirm its neuroprotective properties during chemotherapy. Although the tests have so far only been conducted on animals, they open promising perspectives for using natural plant components to mitigate neurological complications during cancer treatment.
