Semolina porridge: beloved classic or hidden threat on our table?
Despite the fact that our menu is constantly being replenished with dishes from around the world and unusual culinary combinations, ordinary porridge remains an unchanging classic of the Russian table. However, not all porridges are equally beneficial. We turned to experts to find out which grain is considered the most controversial from a health perspective, and received a unanimous answer – semolina. Let's figure out what its disadvantages are and if it has any beneficial properties.
What semolina is made from
Semolina is produced from soft wheat varieties. Essentially, it is maximally purified and ground wheat grain with particle sizes from 0.25 to 0.75 mm. This degree of processing ensures quick preparation, but at the same time deprives the product of most of the beneficial substances originally present in wheat. However, some nutrients are still preserved.
The benefits of semolina porridge
Semolina porridge contains B vitamins, E, PP, niacin (important for metabolism and protein synthesis), phytin (improving intestinal function and preventing excessive mineralization of the body), as well as minerals: potassium, calcium, phosphorus, selenium, zinc and iron. However, the content of these substances in semolina is extremely insignificant.
- Selenium and potassium are beneficial for those who engage in sports or whose work is associated with severe stress. Because these elements help maintain the health of the cardiovascular system, - says gastroenterologist Galina Bartashevich. - In addition, selenium strengthens immunity, but to feel the effect, you need a fairly large amount of selenium, which semolina doesn't have.
Interestingly, the low fiber content in semolina porridge, unlike other cereals, can be an advantage for people with gastrointestinal problems. Foods high in dietary fiber can irritate the intestines and cause gas formation, which does not occur when consuming semolina. Moreover, semolina porridge has coating properties, which makes it useful for digestive disorders.
- Semolina is suitable for patients with digestive disorders; thanks to its coating effect, it relieves spasms in ulcers and gastritis, - confirms Galina Bartashevich.
Semolina porridge also leads among other porridges in carbohydrate content, which can be useful for athletes building muscle mass.
- It should be understood that everything won't quickly go from semolina to muscles. In addition to nutrition, muscles need to be trained. Only then is weight gained, - summarizes Galina Bartashevich.
However, for an ordinary person not engaged in intensive training, the high carbohydrate content in semolina may be more of a disadvantage than an advantage.
