Japanese scientists made a breakthrough: cycling extends life and preserves independence in old age. Researchers from the University of Tsukuba have proven that regular cycling significantly reduces the risk of death and the need for outside care among the elderly. Particularly impressive results were shown by those who do not drive a car. The revolutionary study was published in the prestigious scientific journal Transportation Research Part F: Traffic Psychology and Behaviour.
The scientific team conducted a large-scale analysis of health data and physical activity of Japanese residents over a ten-year period from 2013 to 2023.
The results were astonishing: elderly participants who regularly used bicycles at the beginning of the study demonstrated far fewer serious health problems in subsequent years. Surprisingly, positive changes were observed not only in long-time cyclists but also in those who discovered this mode of transportation during the course of the study.
The most impressive health improvement indicators were recorded among elderly people without driver's licenses. Scientists note that for this group, bicycle rides became a key compensatory mechanism, replacing other forms of mobility.
The authors of the study emphasize the multifaceted benefits of cycling. In addition to the obvious increase in physical activity, they have a beneficial effect on psycho-emotional state and help maintain independence in the golden years of life. The scientific community calls for the active development of cycling infrastructure and the launch of social programs that will make this mode of transportation more accessible and safe for the older generation.
