It is discovered how a sedentary lifestyle unexpectedly affects the body

American scientists have discovered: prolonged sitting and lack of activity worsen balance and gait even in young and healthy people. This conclusion was made based on a large-scale study of 133 volunteers aged 18 to 35.

As reported by TUT.AZ, the results of this scientific study were published in the prestigious journal Applied Sciences (AS).

The participants of the experiment were divided into four categories based on two key parameters: whether they spend more than six hours daily in a sitting position and whether they engage in physical activity for at least 150 minutes per week. For accurate assessment of balance and gait, scientists used high-tech inertial sensors attached to seven areas of the subjects' bodies. Everything was measured: from the slightest body fluctuations when standing with eyes closed to the preparatory movements of the body before the first step when turning.

The results were quite revealing: balance control disorders were identified not only in people with insufficient physical activity but especially in those who combined prolonged sitting with a sedentary lifestyle. The best stability and balance indicators were demonstrated by volunteers who moved a lot and spent minimal time sitting. Scientists particularly emphasize an important conclusion: for the health of the musculoskeletal system, it is not enough to simply meet the standard exercise norm - it is also necessary to purposefully reduce the number of hours spent sitting.
