Scientists from Tianjin University of Sport and their colleagues have proven that prolonged sitting literally destroys blood vessels from the inside. However, the solution turned out to be surprisingly simple — short physical breaks every half hour reliably protect the endothelium, the inner lining of arteries, and prevent the development of cardiovascular diseases.
The results of the study were published in the journal Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine.
In a large-scale systematic review, the specialists analyzed 24 randomized clinical trials involving 454 volunteers. The conclusion was unequivocal: performing dynamic lower-limb exercises for two to three minutes every 20–30 minutes significantly improves blood flow and eliminates the negative consequences of physical inactivity. Among the most effective exercises are walking, stair climbing, half-squats, and calf raises.
The mechanism behind the destructive impact of a sedentary lifestyle lies in the reduction of the frictional force of blood against vessel walls — known as shear stress. This leads to a decline in the production of nitric oxide, which is responsible for vascular relaxation and protection against inflammation. The numbers speak for themselves: each additional hour of sitting beyond 10 hours per day increases the risk of heart disease by eight percent.
Endothelial dysfunction caused by insufficient blood flow is an early functional impairment that precedes atherosclerosis. The scientists emphasize an important nuance: the positive effect of breaks directly depends on the location of the vessel. Blood flow in leg arteries recovers best of all, whereas brachial artery measurements require separate interpretation. The reason is that the brachial artery less frequently encounters extreme pressure fluctuations caused by gravity, and its tone is regulated to a greater extent by the sympathetic nervous system and systemic factors — stress levels, breathing patterns, and body posture. This is precisely why ordinary walking does not always have the same rapid and pronounced effect on it as on the femoral or tibial arteries.
The problem of physical inactivity is meanwhile reaching global proportions: according to the World Health Organization, nearly 28% of adults do not meet the recommendations for physical activity. The study results convincingly demonstrate that regular leg stretching is a cheap and accessible strategy for protecting blood vessels. Incorporating such active breaks into work schedules can support cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of dangerous complications without any pharmaceutical intervention.
