How to recognize a watermelon with nitrates: simple visual inspection methods

There are several effective methods for determining elevated nitrate content in watermelons without special equipment. Therapist Diana Glistenkova shared practical advice with "Gazeta.Ru" on choosing a safe berry.

"The fruit should be symmetrical (round or oval), try to avoid fruits with obvious dents, cracks, irregularities - this is a sign of uneven growth or possible damage. The rind should be intact, clean, without cracks and visible damage. A watermelon should have a pronounced glossy shine, but not excessive smoothness. An overly glossy surface may indicate an abundance of nitrates. A quality watermelon has a bright, contrasting pattern, rich stripes on a dark green background. Make sure there is a clear "ground spot," its brightness indicates natural ripening in the sun, not with the help of nitrates," the doctor explained.

Special attention should be paid to the internal appearance of the watermelon after cutting.

"If the flesh is bright, grainy and has a shiny surface - this is a sign of a ripe and tasty watermelon. The color depends on the variety, but it should not be unnaturally red. In this case, we may be talking about an increased nitrate content in the watermelon," noted the doctor.
