Four habits that can rejuvenate your brain by 8 years - new scientific research
Brain youth is the key to its health. After all, the older the organ, the more it is susceptible to the development of pathological conditions, such as, for example, dementia. Naturally, many want to make their brain younger and healthier. Experts note that four simple habits can help with this.
Researchers from the University of Florida made an amazing discovery: optimism, healthy and sufficiently deep sleep, ability to cope with stress, and strong social support are directly related to brain rejuvenation. Results, confirmed by MRI scans, showed that these habits can make the brain younger by a whole eight years!
The large-scale study involved 128 middle-aged and elderly adults living on four continents. Observations of the participants continued for four years. Almost 70% of the subjects were women, many of whom suffered from chronic pain caused by osteoarthritis of the knee joint.
Using advanced MRI techniques and machine learning, the brain age of each participant was assessed. It was then compared with the actual age of the trial participants. Those who reported a healthy combination of psychological factors and proper lifestyle had brains that looked eight years younger.
Interestingly, in the presence of difficulties and chronic pain, the brain looked older. Low education and income levels, as well as social disadvantage, also negatively affected its age.
Scientists attribute other factors of healthier brain aging to quitting smoking and maintaining a healthy weight.
