Demographic crisis threatens the extinction of entire cultures and languages of the world
This is reported in a new study by specialists from Shizuoka University (Japan), the results of which were published in the authoritative scientific journal PLOS One.
Using advanced methods of mathematical modeling, scientists have come to an alarming conclusion: to ensure population stability, each woman must give birth to an average of at least 2.7 children. The developed model comprehensively took into account natural fluctuations in birth rates, mortality, and sex ratios.
Despite the continuing growth of the total world population, regional statistics cause serious concerns: today, two-thirds of Earth's inhabitants live in countries where the birth rate does not reach the critical minimum of 2.1. The situation is especially dramatic in developed countries: in Japan, this indicator is only 1.3, in the USA — 1.66, and in South Korea, an unprecedentedly low level of 0.87 has been recorded. The actual rates of demographic decline may turn out to be significantly faster than predicted: according to calculations, Japan's population risks decreasing by a third in just one generation.
Notably, in stressful conditions, nature launches a kind of protective mechanism: there is a statistically significant increase in the proportion of newborn girls, which increases the reproductive potential of the population. This phenomenon has been recorded both in human communities and in the animal world.
Researchers particularly emphasize: the sustainability of humanity is not only a question of quantitative indicators but also the preservation of invaluable cultural and genetic heritage for future generations.
