Doctor identified a new disease caused by vaping

Vaping delivers a serious blow to oral health, contributing to the development of cavities, Denis Moiseev, a candidate of medical sciences, told "Gazeta.Ru".

"Propylene glycol and glycerin from the aerosol form a special film on the teeth and mucous membrane, which becomes an ideal environment for the reproduction of harmful bacteria. This leads to the rapid growth of microorganisms that cause cavities and periodontitis. Nicotine, even in minimal doses, together with the aerosol, significantly disrupts the function of the salivary glands. After all, saliva is the main protective barrier: it cleanses the oral cavity from bacteria and food residues, neutralizes acids, and restores enamel. Insufficient salivation inevitably leads to cavities, gum inflammation, and mucosal damage," the specialist emphasized.

The doctor also noted that the chemicals contained in the aerosol (flavorings, nicotine, tiny particles) cause constant irritation of the mucous membrane, which manifests as redness, swelling, and burning.

"The active reproduction of periodontal pathogenic bacteria against the background of a weakened immune response (nicotine suppresses the work of immune cells) and chronic inflammation leads first to bleeding and swelling of the gums, and then to the destruction of the tooth's ligament apparatus and bone tissue. At the same time, nicotine, causing vascular spasm, temporarily reduces gum bleeding. This creates a deceptive sense of well-being and postpones a visit to the dentist until the disease reaches a severe stage," the medic explained.

The reversibility of the consequences directly depends on the duration of the vaping habit, its intensity, individual characteristics of the body, and timely cessation of this habit. The sooner a person stops using electronic cigarettes, the more chances to minimize irreversible damage.
