Expert reveals unexpected rule: why bananas should be washed, even if you don't eat the peel
Food technology specialist Tamika Sims shared an important but often ignored advice: products with peel, including bananas, need to be thoroughly washed under running water, even if you don't plan to consume the peel itself. In an interview with Mirror, the expert emphasized that this hygienic habit is critically important for safe food handling and helps minimize the transfer of dirt and microbes from the peel to the edible part. "Even if it seems illogical, bananas should be washed first," Sims insists.
According to the technologist, the washing procedure is necessary to remove dirt, dangerous bacteria, and pesticide residues from the surface of fruits, which prevents them from getting on hands and then into the body. Consuming unwashed fruits can lead to serious food poisoning caused by dangerous bacteria such as salmonella, E. coli, and listeria. Sims also noted that unwashed fruits and vegetables may contain particles of dirt, debris, and even insects. Of particular concern are pesticide residues, contact with which is associated with an increased risk of developing a number of serious diseases, including autism, cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and dementia.
