Scientists sound the alarm: two new seasons have appeared on Earth
An international group of researchers has made a disturbing discovery: the global climate calendar has been supplemented with two new seasons caused by human activity. The "haze season" and "garbage season" have already become annual phenomena that seriously disrupt ecosystems and pose a threat to the health of millions of people around the world.
The haze season annually covers Southeast Asia from June to September. The main culprit is the massive burning of tropical peatlands for agricultural needs in Indonesia and Malaysia. The thick smoke does not recognize state borders and spreads to neighboring countries, including Singapore and Thailand, causing catastrophic deterioration of air quality and a surge in respiratory diseases. A similar situation is observed in winter in northern India, where the tradition of burning agricultural residues coincides with the Diwali festival. In the United States, the forest fire season, once limited to summer months, now begins in spring and continues until December.
The garbage season turns Bali's paradise beaches into landfills from December to March, when monsoon winds and ocean currents wash tons of plastic waste ashore. In 2025, more than 3000 tons of garbage were collected in just one season. Similar environmental disasters regularly occur in the Philippines, Thailand, and along the east coast of the USA, especially in summer, when intensifying rains and river runoff transport plastic waste into the ocean.
