Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet officially nominated Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize
As reported by TUT.AZ, this was announced by the Cambodian Press Agency.
"I, as the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, have the great honor to officially nominate the respected Donald J. Trump, the 45th and 47th President of the United States of America, for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his historic contribution to promoting world peace," states the letter from Hun Manet dated August 7, sent to the Nobel Committee.
In his address, the Cambodian Prime Minister noted Trump's "exceptional statesmanship" and expressed gratitude for his mediation in resolving the tense border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand. According to Hun Manet, the US President demonstrated "exceptional achievements in reducing tensions in some of the world's most unstable regions."
Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia sharply escalated after a May incident when a Cambodian serviceman died as a result of a military clash in the disputed border territory.
The situation reached a critical point on July 24, when armed clashes erupted on the border of the two states after a Cambodian mine explosion injured five Thai military personnel. During the conflict, both sides accused each other of provocations.
Thanks to international efforts, on July 28, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced a ceasefire between the conflicting parties. This was preceded by negotiations in Kuala Lumpur with the participation of representatives from the US and China.
The final agreement on the settlement of the border conflict was signed on August 7 following new negotiations in the Malaysian capital.
