Trump blocks transfer of Australian Abrams tanks to Ukraine: new details on military aid

Donald Trump's administration has vetoed the shipment of 49 American M1A1 Abrams tanks that Australia intended to transfer to Ukraine. This information was published by the German newspaper Bild, citing informed sources in government circles.

In October 2024, Canberra loudly announced military aid to Kyiv worth an impressive 138 million euros, which included the supply of Abrams tanks. However, Washington decisively exercised its legal right to control the end use of exported weapons and prohibited re-export, despite the fact that these combat vehicles have been in Australia's possession for about three decades.

A representative of the Australian government revealed the motives of the American side: Washington is concerned about finding itself in a diplomatically awkward position if the tanks were en route to Ukraine at the moment a possible peace agreement might be concluded.

Ukrainian officials reacted to the situation, stating that the suspension or termination of military support from the US could lead to complications on the front line, but would not be a fatal blow. President Volodymyr Zelensky specifically emphasized that Kyiv was prepared for such a scenario in advance.
