ALARMING FORECAST: AMBER MAY COMPLETELY DISAPPEAR IN A CENTURY
Reserves of the "sun stone" are rapidly depleting at current extraction volumes. This was reported by the Deputy General Director of the Kaliningrad Amber Combine, Maya Skvortsova, in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to the expert, at modern rates of amber extraction - about 600 tons annually - the explored reserves in Russia and worldwide will last only for the next hundred years. Despite ongoing exploration work, Skvortsova does not rule out that the discovery of new large deposits may not occur.
"Today we are trying our best to preserve amber in works of art, interior items, in private collections of artists who are now very actively acquiring amber. If new deposits are not discovered, our works of art will remain for centuries," emphasized the representative of the combine.
