Syrian doctor who tortured people sentenced to life imprisonment by German court

Syrian orthopedic doctor received a life sentence in Germany for torture and murder in the interests of the Assad regime

As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to EuroTUT.AZ, the Higher Regional Court of Frankfurt am Main handed down a severe sentence to a former Syrian doctor who, after committing brutal crimes in his homeland, worked as an orthopedic surgeon in the north of the federal state of Hesse for several years.

The forty-year-old defendant was found guilty of murder, torture, and crimes against humanity. The court considered all charges fully proven, sentencing Alaa M. to life imprisonment. Notably, the judges also established a special degree of guilt, which means an additional punishment measure — after serving the main term, the criminal will be placed in preventive detention.

Despite the fact that Alaa M. denied his involvement in the incriminated acts until the last moment, the court came to a definitive conclusion about his guilt. According to the case materials, for more than two years, the doctor systematically tortured and killed people at various facilities in Syria. The particularly serious crimes were committed on the orders of Bashar al-Assad's regime during the period of 2011-2012.
