Southern part of Kamchatka shifted by 2 meters after powerful earthquake
Russian scientists have recorded large-scale geodynamic changes in Kamchatka following the earthquake that occurred on July 30.
According to Russian media, preliminary research data showed that the southern part of the peninsula shifted to the southeast by almost 2 meters. Experts note that such horizontal movements are comparable to those observed after the devastating earthquake in Japan's Tohoku in 2011. Meanwhile, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and the stations located there experienced only minor displacements.
Specialists from the Kamchatka branch of the Federal Research Center "Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences" confirmed that the recorded displacements fully correspond to the model of movements at the earthquake's epicenter. Maximum changes were observed precisely on the southern flank, which explains the strong macroseismic effect in Severo-Kurilsk with less pronounced impact on Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
