Russian blogger Viktor Vasiliev detained in Bishkek on charges of mercenary activity

As reported by TUT.AZ, the press service of the Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek confirmed to TASS the information about the detention of a Russian citizen.

Earlier, information spread on social networks that Viktor Vasiliev, the creator of the popular Telegram channel "Smile and Wave," who is also characterized in the media space as an Africanist and political scientist, was arrested in Kyrgyzstan.

"By the decision of the Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek, the investigator's petition from the Main Investigation Department of the State Committee for National Security of the Kyrgyz Republic regarding the application of a preventive measure in the form of detention for the accused V.V.A. is satisfied," the official statement from the judicial authority says.

The blogger is charged under Part 3 of Article 43, Part 1 of Article 416 of the Criminal Code of Kyrgyzstan, which is classified as mercenary activity. The court determined the preventive measure in the form of detention for the entire period of the investigation - until June 17, 2025.
